1 in 4 Smartphone Users also use Tablet

It's a good time for Apple and Google. Turns out that 1 in every 4 smartphone users is also using a tablet computer like the iPad or the Transformer.

Comscore tracked tablet and phone usage over the last year and compiled some nice stats. In April 2011, only 4.7% of the general mobile phone using public had a tablet. That number skewed higher among those with smarthphones, at 9.7%, while feature phone users brought it down, at 2.3%. Things changes a lot even a year later, though.

In April 2012 the data showed that 16.5% of the total phone using population had a tablet, which is a 11.8% point change. Among smartphone users the number increased to 23.6%, or roughly a quarter of the total user base. Usage among those with feature phones remains small, at 10.4%.

Comscore also collected some interesting information on usage. Namely, that tablet users are 3x more likely to watch video on their devices than smartphone users. 53% of tablet users will watch any video on their device in a given month, compared to a mere 20% on their smartphone. 24.6% of tablet users watch 1-3 times throughout the month, compared to 10.3% of smartphone users. 18.9% watch it at least once a week on a tablet compared to 6.7% of smartphone users, and finally 9.5% of tablet users watch video on their device every day compared to a mere 2.9% for smartphones.

Other data that Comscore collected shows that tablets skew older and richer, with almost 3/5ths of all tablets owned by those making more than $75,000 a year. Tablets are also used a little bit more by women, while smartphones are used a little bit more by men.
