Thought that the movement to legalize marijuana was a small fringe movement of loners and drug addicts? Think again. The numbers show that people who support the legalization of pot are in the majority. An astounding 81% even believe that marijuana should be proscribed for medical reasons. The nation is split at 50% believing that it should be legalized, trending upwards by definition already the majority.

In an effort to show just how widespread the support for the legalization of marijuana is, the website Marijuana Majority created a helpful list of all those who have voiced support for legalization. And it really is an impressive list. Such luminaries as billionaire richard Branson, John Stewart of Daily Show fame, and Pat Robinson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, are quoted.

Why all the support? One simple reason: the war on drugs has failed. This image shows just how spectacularly useless the war on drugs has been:

Which is why even a staunch conservative christian like Pat Robinson said:

I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol. I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded.

And actor David Duchovny said:

everybody I know, if they want to, has smoked pot. The fact that it’s illegal doesn’t stop anybody I know, so why not allow everybody to benefit from it? It would be billions of dollars of tax revenue.

The tax revenue alone would make legalization worth it, in my opinion.
