Game of Thrones Most Pirated Show of this Season

With each episode being downloaded almost 4 million times, HBO's Game of Thrones has become the most pirated show of this season. Game of Thrones beat out How I Met your Mother and The Big Bang Theory, both of which scored around 2.8 million downloads, though they have a much, much larger viewer base.

The interesting thing is that HBO doesn't seem to see this as a problem. Their attitude up to this point has been that, as long as they keep a large subscriber base, it doesn't matter if people steal their content. I wouldn't be surprised if that changes, though.

HBO has a history of piracy problems. Their shows are generally quite high quality and generate a lot of buzz, but actually watching the content can be difficult for many.

Game of Thrones, for example, has seen international buzz. Yet HBO has only made the show available to subscribers, and then only those in the United States got easy access. In Australia, for example, where the show has proven to be quite the hit, it is on a week delay.

The problem is, many of the pirates would love to pay. I got Game of Thrones through a watching party this year, but I don't have cable. Without any online option at all sans subscription, many have turned to piracy. There have even been reports of people mailing checks to HBO to compensate them for the show that they pirated, since there is no better way to handle it.

For more information, head to the originating source. They have a list of the top ten most downloaded shows, which actually contains a few surprises. Turns out the numbers don't necessarily match up with the most popular shows on television.
