LG to Build Google Nexus TV
Unlike smartphone android, Google TV, Google’s android-based TV software, has failed to take off. In fact, it failed to take off so spectacularly that one of the launch partners has sworn off the platform completely, after taking a massive hit from unsold merchandise.
Google has managed to score some more partners, but the company still won’t have complete control over the hardware. Could the comany be considering remedying that with a Nexus TV?
The Original Nexus device, the Nexus One, marked a turning point in Android hardware. It had a polish and form factor that not other Android device did at the time--a slab of a device with a screen and no keyboard. The only other true high-end Android device was the Droid, a phone with a slide-out keyboard. It was the first of its kind, showing just how great Android could be if given proper hardware.
Later Nexus devices have been more evolutionary than revolutionary, but that doesn’t diminish their importance. They have been devices that Google feels comfortable touting as some of the best on the market, hardware to design for.
Which is why there is, in addition to a rumored Nexus TV, a rumored Nexus tablet.
Bloomberg is claiming that LG is the favored contender for a Nexus TV device set to come out later this year. Keep in mind that this is based on anonymous tipsters, so it could be true, it could be false. It does seem likely that Google would be releasing a Nexus TV, though, and Google does like to mix it up with Nexus manufacturers, so both Samsung and HTC are not likely to get the role. Either way, it seems likely that we will get a Nexus TV, whether we want one or not.
