New Syfy Show 'Defiance' Combines Show & MMOSyfy unveiled the first trailer for an ambitious new multimedia project called 'Defiance' earlier today. The show promises scifi/fantasy action, politics, and romance on a ruined Earth set 35 years in the future. But that isn't the most interesting part.
No, that would have to be the MMO that is being released alongside the television show.
'Defiance' is going to be a hybrid multimedia experience. The events on the show will dictate what happens in the game, and the game will guide and direct the show.
The idea is interesting, but I have to wonder how successful the project will be. sure, if Syfy manages to get people hooked on the show, or the MMO, the other might benefit. But we're talking about two projects with large barriers to entry. Even more MMO's fail than tv shows, which is an impressive statistic all its own.
And, let's be honest, the trailer looks a little worrying. Between the mediocre special effects work, worrisome acting, and a tired premise, we could be looking at a big-budget project designed more by committee than someone who cares about the material.
Regardless, though, it's going to be interesting to see what comes from this interactive TV show. Clearly people can't direct the path of the show too much, because by the end of the series each episode would need dozens of alternate scenes filmed. But the idea that actions n the game will have any effect at all is intriguing. I'm imagining the thrill when a power player gets name-dropped on the show, for example, or when a clan does something absolutely amazing.
Who knows? Syfy might be able to pull this off.
