Skyrim Mod Recreates Mario, Mushroom Kingdom
Ah, modding. Responsible for many of the stranger moments in gaming history, mods have been a way for livening up games and increasing replayability since the original Doom way back in 1991. These days, however, modding has lost quite a bit of its lustre thanks to consoles, or, namely, their lack of support for it. But some modders keep toiling away to fashion compelling gameplay experiences and to prove once and for all that PC gaming is better than console gaming.
The latest addition to the annals of modding history comes courtesy of a modder by the pseudonym of clintmich. He has created a mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that recreates Mario. It is called "Super Skyrim Bros". In it, you wield your plumber's hammer to whack goompas and a staff of fire flower to blow up Koopa. It is all part of a 3-hour journey to get to Bowser, where you must duel him to the death.
Making all this more surreal is the fact that it isn't a complete replacement of the game. You could play the entire game with this mod installed and never see it. Instead, you access it by laying down on a bed in an abandoned house. Basically rendering the entire experience one gigantic, surreal, genre-bending dream. That said, the mod's creator recommends you be level 50 before tempting your fate against the Mushroom Kingdom.
Throughout your journey you will go through 5 unique worlds and fight a dozen new enemies. You can collect fire flowers, coins, and chat with toadstools--you know, all the things you would expect from a Mario game. Except that this Mario happens to be skinny, armed with a hammer that looks more like a bat, and likes to run around bashing poor, defenseless creatures in the wild.
All in all, a good, if strange, time.
