Incredible Replica of Portal Gun up for Auction

Harrison Krix of Volpin Props is auctioning off a replica of the famous gun from Valve’s award-winning puzzle game, Portal. His first replica, of the same portal-creating gun that drives the gameplay of the popular title, made him a celebrity among gamers and prop builders in 2009. The money raised by the auction of the replica will be donated to Child’s Play, a video game culture fuelled charity that provides toys and games to children’s hospitals.

Harrison Krix is an Atlanta-based graphic designer and prop replicator who shot to internet celebrity last year when he first posted images on Cosplay.com of a project he had been working on. The pictures were of a full-scale Portal gun replica that Krix was designing as a part of a Halloween costume, of a character from Valve’s cult classic game of the same name.

Support and accolades almost immediately began to flow in from the community, and after finishing the first replica, Krix was inspired by the outpouring to create a second model to benefit Child’s Play. The handcrafted prop is meticulously detailed, featuring lights that can be changed between the characteristic orange and blue portal colors and familiar integrated sound effects. Krix outlines the laborious process he carried out to make the model on his blog, in jaw dropping detail. The replica looks absolutely mindboggling and has already begun to set fanboys and fangirls squeeing in delight.

Child’s Play Charity

The gun will be auctioned off at a sold out Child’s Play charity dinner in Seattle on December 7th, 2010. The replica will be sold with Valve’s blessing; in fact, it will sit atop a custom designed and crafted base, autographed by their team. Child’s Play is a well-respected charity within the gaming industry. It was started in 2003 by the creators of Penny Arcade in order to provide toys and games to hospitals for sick children.

Gamers are traditionally a misunderstood and maligned subculture, and the charity does considerable outreach to correct this view. Every year, Child’s Play holds a toy drive that benefits hospitals across the globe. Game industry insiders, members and supporters have come together to raise millions of dollars since the charity began, towards this altruistic goal. Through Child’s Play, donators can even send items online from the comfort of their own home, via Amazon wishlists that are set up directly with hospital staff that know exactly what is needed by their patients.

Portal 2

The Portal replica gun will make the perfect purchase for an affluent fan that can’t wait for the release of the upcoming sequel, Portal 2. However, even if they can’t afford the real life replica, gamers will be able to get their hands back on the virtual version of the device when the game hits stores this spring, in April 2011. Portal 2 had an impressive preview at E3, earning accolades from industry insiders that were allowed a hands-on trial of the fully realised title. Fans of the first game in the series are hotly anticipating the return of GlaDOS, the quirky artificial intelligence unit that promises the cake is not a lie, and a return to a new location of the Aperture Science labs. The upcoming title is widely expanded from the first, featuring new innovations including a cooperative mode, improved physics, new devices and enhanced level design.

See-Through Portal Shirt

If you can’t wait until April and you want to try your hand at creating your own Portal replica, The Ben Heck Show has a project tutorial that is right up your alley. By wiring together an LCD screen and a small CCD camera, Heck demonstrates how you can create a small, wearable device that gives the illusion of a portal passing right through the middle of your stomach.

The effect is surprisingly impressive and would also integrate well into other Portal-based mods and projects. The instructions on the show are clear, helpful and explicitly detailed, so after picking up the supplies on his included list and watching the process on The Ben Heck Show, you could be wearing your very own Portal shirt in time to bid on the replica gun at the charity dinner in December.
