Songza Improves ICS Client with Smart Playlists

Are you as in love with Songza's intelligent music playlists and curated content as I am? Then you'll be happy to hear that the service has just updated its Android app to include support for smart playlists and the music concierge. Now you can choose music that is suitable for the time of day wherever you are, whenever you want.

The big new inclusion is the music concierge, which first hit the web back in March. The music concierge takes into account the date and time you are looking for music to recommend some options. Right now, for example, it is Tuesday afternoon.

I can choose: 'An energy boost," "Summertime," "Office Crowd-Pleaser," "A Weekday Dance Party," and "Legendary Record Collectors." Each one offers a different style of music you can choose from. For example, choosing "An Energy Boost" lets you pick from Happy Pop, Energetic Indie, Upbeat 90's, Classic Upbeat Hits, and Hype Rap. Then each of those has 5 playlists to choose from.

Despite using the service routinely for the last couple of months, I find that the service still offers some musical surprises for me. I generally still like what I hear and haven't heard too much repetition, which is better than can be said for Pandora, Last.FM or even Rdio. That is largely thanks to the playlists being produced by expert playlist crafters, rather than machines.

If you haven't given the service a try, you really should. The music is ad-free, the tunes great, and the music concierge very helpful.

One note: the new mobile music concierge and smart playlists are only available on Android devices with ICS and higher. It has been available on iOS since its initial reveal.
