Streaming Games to Find Home On Playstation 4
I happen to be a big proponent of streaming video games. As a proud owner of a Mac Book Air and a couple of decade-old desktops, I like my gaming experience to be rendered in the cloud. So I am understandably a bit excited that Sony has bought out Gakai, a streaming game service mostly known for bringing game demos into your browser.
The deal went down for $380 million and gives Sony an existing technology infrastructure. Explains Andrew House, President and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment:

“By combining Gaikai’s resources, including its technological strength and engineering talent, with Sony’s extensive game platform knowledge and experience, Sony will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences.Sony will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of Internet-connected devices.”Who knows what this will mean for Walmart, Samsung, and LG, all of which have partnered with Gakai. But this is good news for Sony, who can now bundle the tech exclusively on its televisions and gaming consoles.
I, personally, am hoping that Sony uses this technology to create a cheap, streaming console. I know that won't happen, but at least they could aim for a hybrid gaming experience, where much of the game data is stored on servers rather than disks or your hard drive. But we will just have to wait and see how Sony decides to use one of the two best streaming gaming platforms out there.
