Streaming Takes Center Stage on the XBox 360We saw plenty of games mentioned at Microsoft's E3 keynote, but there was something there you wouldn't have expected to see a couple of years ago: the announcement of several new streaming services.
Today Microsoft announced XBox Music, a streaming competitor to Rdio and Spotify that has over 30 million songs in its library, NBA League Pass, which lets you watch the game from your console, and NHL and WatchESPN, which also let you watch sports.
The NBA app will bring 2400 live games and highlights to your console, while the NHL app will bring 40+ games each week.
The interesting thing is that these apps got central billing. they were revealed at the same time as Microsoft's first party games, giving them just as much weight.
This is a clear shift of focus. When the XBox 360 and Playstation 3 were released, it was the Playstation that targeted media and the XBox 360 that focused solely on games. Now the 360 has a better media library than the Playstation 3, and it is even posing a challenge to devices like the Google and Apple TV.
If Microsoft keeps this up, the XBox 360 could become the ultimate set top box, and the only one you will ever need.
Details are scarce right now, considering that they were just announced. But We will give you more information as it becomes available.
